The ASSC welcomes members and non-members to participate in workshops and classes.  All classes are held at the A.J. Ottewell Community Centre in Sherwood Park, and registration is open to those 18 years of age and older.


Take the next step in your artistic journey!  ASSC offers many online and in person workshops.  You can explore a range of classes from drawing and painting in all mediums to developing style and process.  Whether you’re looking for art workshops for beginners or you’re already an experienced artist, you can take your skills to the next level.  All our classes and workshops are taught by talented artists and professionals, giving you opportunities to learn new techniques with new tools.

    WORKSHOP with FRANCIS MARTE –

    Portrait Composition

    This one day workshop will cover: 

    1.  Choosing your best photos to paint and/or draw.

    2. Editing reference photos for an effective composition - Cropping, removing or adding elements and enhancing reference photos.

    Students can bring their own reference portrait photos.


    The instructor will also guide students on how to prep for realism watercolour painting, and also provide general composition techniques and tips for all mediums.  (Images shown are not by this instructor.)

    Workshop with Mianna Laugesen - Introduction to Alcohol Ink


    In this one afternoon workshop, we will start with the basics of how to work with alcohol inks.  The class will learn to use various surfaces, such as ceramic tile and synthetic paper, and will learn the steps to create a composed abstract work.

    Watercolour for all skill levels.  With easy to follow handouts, this course is designed with no drawing skills needed.

    Workshop with Afton Jane - Oil/Acrylic Still Life

      

    In this workshop held over 3 Thursday evenings, you will paint a still life using the Zorn palette (yellow ochre, alizeran crimson, cobalt blue, titanium white & ivory black).  As Afton demos, the students will learn how to plan a composition, the history of the Zorn palette and its traditional use, how to mix using this palette, and the way to layer the paint from start to finish.

    Watercolour Techniques Workshop with

    Terrie Shaw



    Chapter One:  In this workshop, you will create your own beautifully curated reference book to keep essential painting techniques close at hand. You will complete 24 pages of practical tools designed to support your creative practice across a range of painting mediums.  Learn how to organize and balance the pages in your book using templates provided with this workshop.  More topics include: Colour Wheel varieties, Colour Charts, One and Two Point perspective, Circular perspective, People in perspective. Terrie Shaw invites both beginners and advanced artists to paint along with her.  (Part two of this workshop will be offered January 21 to March 4 of 2027.)

    Workshop with Oksana Zhelisko - Hallowe'en Themes in Oil/Acrylic



    Join us for a creative and atmospheric painting workshop exploring the magic of Halloween through oil or acrylic painting. This hands-on session focuses on composition, colour mixing, tonal contrast, and glowing light effects to help artists create dramatic and moody seasonal artwork.

    Participants will learn how to design strong compositions, mix rich Halloween-inspired colours, and use light and shadow to create depth, mystery, and atmosphere. Special attention will be given to painting glowing effects such as jack-o’-lanterns, candlelight, moonlight, and eerie fog using both oil and acrylic techniques.

    Suitable for beginners and intermediate painters, this workshop includes guided demonstrations, colour exercises, and step-by-step instruction while allowing room for personal creativity and interpretation.

    Create your own hauntingly beautiful Halloween scene while developing stronger painting skills in a fun and inspiring studio environment. (Image shown is just an example.)

    In this two day workshop, you will learn how to paint a snowy, daytime winter landscape.  Learn how to paint an atmospheric blue sky, snowy foreground, distant trees and mountains and a snow-capped cottage.
