2018 Student Art Competition, Show and Sale

When is the show?

Friday May 11th, 2018– 7 pm – 9 pm                                                                      (show opening, reception and prizes awarded)

Saturday May 12th, 2018– 11 am – 4 pm

Sunday May 13th, 2018- 11 am -4 pm

Family, friends and the public are welcome.

Who can enter?

-Grade 10, 11 and 12 students attending an accredited school/program in Strathcona County 

-There is no artist-entry fee for this show.

-All participants are expected to attend Friday’s opening and prize presentations.

How and when do I enter?

Art is entered online using this website. The link is at end of this information.

Students enter starting December 22, 2017 up to and including April 30th, 2018

Yes, you can register on weekends.

What can I enter?

NEW - ONE piece of 2 D or 3D art . You choose the medium.

All art must be original - no reproductions. Photography and computer altered original photography allowed.

Art can be created in class but the instructor must not have physically assisted in the creation.The exception to this rule is for the Special Education classes whereby it is understood instructor assistance can be allowed. 

Art must be dry and have a hanging device that will work with a pegboard hook.

Art must have been created in the last 2 years.

Art can be for sale, for SCAAA submission or just exhibition.

NEW (in 2016) – art size and registration limit

Each school may enter 3 oversized pieces – up to 36-48” or 1728 sq inches.

All other 2D art maximum outside dimensions framed or unframed – 26”x38” or 1000 sq. inches

3D art –same size restrictions

Maximum 150 pieces of art will be registered

 When do I deliver my art?

Wednesday May 9, 2018 between 4pm and 5pm, arranged through the schools teachers.

What about labeling the art?

Label 2-D art on the back and 3-D art underneath. Teachers will have labels available. You can also download one from the tab  called Art Label from the menu on the left.

Do I need to frame my art for the Student Show?

Though it is not mandatory, framed work and canvasses must have suitable wire and screws for hanging. (Wire must be heavy enough to support the art.) Foam core and board paintings will be supported using pegboard hooks. 

              Did you know that you can submit your art to                                                     Strathcona County’s Annual Art Acquisition – Youth Category (SCAAA) when you enter the Art Society’s Student Show?

Please go to and read all SCAAA documents- tabs on the Left Menu under Student Show. You can choose to submit your work for purchase by the County, for loan to the County for one year, or as a donation.

All art submitted to the SCAAA will be displayed in the Salon Series Show at the Gallery 501.  (501 Festival Avenue, Sherwood Park), from May 15 to June 23, 2018.

Only original art will be considered for the Collection.

You must be a resident of Strathcona County to enter the County SCAAA.  

The framing requirements for the SCAAA – Youth Category are the same as for the Student Show.

As a condition of the purchase, loan or donation programs, Strathcona County requires all artists to sign a Reproduction & Exhibition Agreement and/or Loan Agreement, permitting the County to display the work publicly, and reproduce the work, or a portion thereof, in a print or electronic format. Artists will sign this document with Strathcona County staff.

SCAAA selected art will be publicly announced at the Unveiling Reception at Gallery @ 501 on June 7th, 2018 at 7pm. Artists will be notified prior to the Pick up time on May 13th at 4pm  if they have been selected and their art is being taken by the SCAAA.

When is art picked up?

Sunday May 13th 2018 between 4:15pm and 5:00pm. Schools will arrange pick up of art. 

Sold art will be picked up by the buyers.

All art submitted to County Art Acquisition (SCAAA) will be picked up by Strathcona County staff for display in the “Salon Series” show in the Gallery @ 501, from May 15 to June 23, 2018.

Who juries the shows?

Different jurors will adjudicate ASSC Show and Strathcona County Annual Art Acquisition entries.

Art entered in both ASSC and SCAAA are eligible for ASSC prizes.

Student Show art is adjudicated by grade and subject/medium.

When will I know if my art has been selected as a prize winner?

Student Show prizes will be presented Friday May 11th, 2018 at 7:15 p.m.

The Art Society of Strathcona County is not responsible for any damage to art left for the show. We will be carefully handling and displaying the art but it is left at students’ risk. 

How does the Society protect my personal-contact information?
ASSC Collection and Use of Personal Information

This information is collected for the purpose of organizing the ASSC Student Art Competition, Show and Sale. When the show is over and all prize and art sales’ cheques are issued, the personal-contact information on show documents and in ASSC and Show Committee computers will be shredded/deleted.

If you entered art in the Strathcona County Annual Art Acquisition, your personal-contact information will be shared with the Art Collection Advisory Committee and Strathcona County Recreation, Parks and Culture staff, as you are registering for SCAAA when you register for the Student Show.
